Greetings!
I'm having a hard time believing what I saw today. It has nothing to do with the old Chevys in my shop, but it is definitely car related. Nonetheless, I received a call from my son Skylar today while I was still in church. He and his wife Annie usually attend with us, but since the new baby came it's been harder for them to wake up in the mornings.
I stepped out of the meeting and called Skylar but got no answer. Seeing that I had also missed a call from my neighbor Buddy, so I made a call to him, since I was already out in the hallway. Buddy was excited on the phone and told me that Annie had swerved off the road and hit his Peterbilt semi truck out in front of his house. She was in the local hospital and I should head over there. Skylar then returned my call and told me he was already there.
We piled in the car and met Skylar at the hospital where he told us that Annie was not badly injured and was sedated while the staff checked her out. It began to be an extended wait in the emergency room so we headed home to wait for news. As we neared our home we approached Buddy's house, less than 1/2 mile from ours. There was Annie's car, still sitting as it had since she had collided with Buddy's truck. As you can see in the picture above there was extensive damage to the front end. When I see a car like this at Tee Pee Auto Wrecking I sometimes wonder if the occupants died in the collision. This one looked like someone died.
I looked at the damage to Buddy's Peterbilt and noted the big dent in the bumper and the slight indentation in the huge grille. Behind Buddy's truck cab you can see that he's got two trailers attached. To be sure, the little Kia Soul didn't rock his rig an inch.
Buddy came out and we shook hands. He's a good-natured, level headed guy and I suggested that it was his fault for painting his truck that camouflage, bright yellow color. He told us that they heard the collision and ran out and helped her out of the car. They thought they noticed smoke and were concerned about a fire. They sat her in their car at the roadside while they called 911 and sent for an ambulance.
I think the Good Lord has a work for short, little Annie to do in this life so he spared her. I would think that anyone in a car as small as that little KIA hitting a double trailered semi truck head on at 45-50 mph would be dead, or nearly so. We towed it home and parked it in our lot. We'll get a good look at it after the insurance man takes his pictures, but I'm confident that it's totaled.
I hate to be suggesting miracles when it's probably KIA safety engineering, but we're very grateful that Annie is still with us. Not just with us, but she hasn't got a scratch or bruise on her 4'10" body. I wonder what her mission in life is? Maybe she'll run for president with Hillary.
