Greetings!
I finally found some rear leaf spring bushings for the '51 business coupe today. The owner of the NAPA store in Sunnyside located replacement shackles complete with new bushings that should be here the first of next week.
That's all I'm waiting for to replace the axle and put the car back down on all four tires. The axle will be bolted into place with new spring perches but I won't weld the new perches to the axle housing until I have the engine and transmission mounted in the chassis. That needs to be done first so I can determine the correct pinion angle: the relationship between the crankshaft and the pinion gear.
Since everything has to wait for the new leaf spring parts, I gave some attention to the engine recess in the firewall. All the holes are now welded up so I sanded it with the DA sander and spread some bondo on the welds & low spots.
Next, I took careful measurements and drilled mounting holes in the firewall and through the clutch/brake bracket and mounted the power brake booster. I may have to change the positioning of the pedal bracket once I get the clutch master cylinder in place, just to assure that I have enough pedal travel to engage the clutch. Those parts are coming from Speedway Motors and should be here early next week.
The A/C unit is coming at that time also, as well as the electric windshield wiper motor so I can get all the under-dash components put in place and finish up by permanently attaching the smooth firewall panel.
So, a few hold ups are keeping things from looking closer to completion. Hopefully the next couple of weeks will be real productive!
Doug
