The firewall is black! The color coat and clear coat went on without a hitch, and considering I painted it in my shop at home instead of in the booth at the family shop, it has surprisingly little dust. I used a medium temperature reducer in the clear coat and the temperature in the shop was barely 70 degrees which caused the clear to stay wet long enough to flow out nice and flat. I don't mean flat-without gloss, I mean that there is very little texture to the finish. Had it dried too quickly it would have had somewhat of an orange peel texture to it. New car finishes are baked on at the factory so that they can move on to the assembly line quickly. That's the reason for the orange peel texture on a new car. If you look closely at my photo you can see the crisp detail of the garage door behind me as I took the picture, because of the slow drying flow of the paint as it dried.
I cleaned all the paint off of the VIN plate before I painted the firewall and this morning I coated it with clear using a brush to keep overspray off the freshly painted black. I used the information on the VIN plate to look up the body style on the internet and made a significant discovery: Gary, your car is not a Business Coupe, its a Sport Coupe. The Business Coupe is a 3-passenger car and the Sport Coupe is a 6-passenger. This car is not a 3-passenger, there seems to be enough room for the entire Swedish Bikini Team (properly oiled) in the back seat alone. This is tragically unfortunate for Gary because, you see, Gary is a successful business man and I think he wants to have a Business Coupe for that reason. But, having met with Gary several times, I can assure you that he is also a Sporty Guy. He works out, he dresses sharp and has excellent manners. He, and his son Jason (who I assume is also a Sporty Guy) will look properly conveyed in this beautiful little coupe.
I think the bare metal finish on the VIN plate adds a nice contrast and makes it easy to read. For sure, every one of Gary's friends & acquaintances will be asking him if he would please pop the hood so they can read his clearly visible VIN plate.
