Greetings!
Gary's '51 Chevy coupe is coming together for a test drive. I think I'll surprise him and call secretly before I go to his office and ask his secretary to work with me and just tell me if he's there but not tell him that I'm driving the car over.
I cut a hole in the lower tank of the radiator to install a bung to hold the temperature sensor. This sensor will only have the job of turning the radiator fans on and off. You can see the bung and the sensor in the bottom left corner of the mounted radiator. I needed to have it TIG welded into the aluminum and there was nobody in the area to do the job for me. A good friend lent me his brand new TIG welder to do the job myself, but I've not been able to make a clean weld in the few days I've had so far to practice. I had occasion to travel to the Portland area recently and I took the radiator with me. A nice guy named Marty welded it for me at JD Cross Enterprises. They do modifications and repair on tow trucks and have been at it for some time. Jeff, the owner let me visit with Marty as he was welding my radiator and gave me some filler rod & scrap aluminum to practice welding at my shop. I've never seen their work on tow trucks, but they really treated me well and I'd like to recommend them. You can reach them at 503 256-8670 and their address in Portland is:4527 NE 135th Ave Portland, OR 97230. Tell them Doug from Desert Classics sent you.
I recently traded for this 1986 Camaro Z-28 and drove it home. It needs most of the cosmetics revisited. It has a drivetrain I really like: a small block V8 with TPI (Tuned Port Injection) and a 700R4 overdrive transmission. This will be a fun driver, or if someone comes into the shop wanting a hot rod, this would be a great donor car.
Although it looks real rough on the outside (and it is), it has options like power windows and locks, T-tops, A/C and everything works.
Under the hood things look great! It's one of those cars that seems to have eluded the amateur mechanic - everything is just as it should be. This one's a 305. I really don't mind the smaller displacement engine. It gets a bit better mileage and has plenty of power. If I were racing, or wanting to tease the Honda boys in town, I'd want more power, but then, I have that in my other cars. This is fun just like it is.
So, call me at Desert Classics, I may have just the power plant you need for your next project. You can call me at 509 830-4314 or email me at 2desertclassics@gmail.com.
Thanks!
Doug
