DRIVING AROUND TOPLESS

Greetings!
Sorry, but I've been away from the workshop (and from the computer) lately and took my wife to visit my grandchildren in Mesa Arizona. Upon our return we hosted my daughter's family with their two little ones. Fortunately for me, my son in law Nate was willing to
spend a little time with me in the shop and we installed a shop-wide PVC air supply network. Now I have two compressed air outlets in each bay, one of them is located just over my head at the lathe. So convenient! Thanks Nate. Nate and Sunny also snuck out to the garden and pulled most of the weeds in the vineyard - weeds that had caused such an allergic reaction in me that I didn't want to get near the children. They're great. Not the allergies - the children!

After they left I barricaded myself in the paint shop and finished painting the inner fender panels from Gary's '51 Chevy coupe. I had filled holes and patched a factory cut-out intended for the stock steering box. Since we were using power rack and steering, the cut-out was no longer needed. Once the paint cures and I mount the two panels I can begin routing wiring through the engine compartment and up under the dash.
Recently, I was approached by a local customer with a proposition to paint her '68 Camaro Standard Convertible shown in the accompanying photo. The handsome young man in the car is my helpful son in law. Somebody had painted this poor convertible a few years ago but the clear is peeling off. I suspect that the painter didn't use enough clear in the finish and then buffed the car to a nice shine. By so doing, he didn't leave enough clear on the red base coat and the sun just cooked the clear off. It seems evident by the paint pattern in the deck lid and on the hood.

I'll also be installing the interior. It'll be red like the exterior. I took the car down to where the pavement starts the night the customer dropped it off and as a result of that experience I believe that it's only running on 7 cylinders. It should have much more power than it displays. I'm going to have to talk her into a tune-up before returning it to her!

My plan is to
  • clean up under the hood and do the tune-up,
  • strip out the interior
  • fix any rust panels (I saw a rust blister on the drivers' rear fender)
  • paint it with code RR - Matador Red
  • install the new interior
  • deliver the car
  • go to Disneyland!
